From observation
to abstraction.
Miller’s training followed the traditions of the nineteenth-century French Academy. Studying historic painting, the human figure, landscape, and nature gave him a grounding in representational work. His interests gradually turned toward abstraction, drawing on images encountered through journalism, the internet, digital photography, computers, and popular culture.
Years of figure studies, landscape paintings, and drawings from life developed alongside an extensive photographic practice. Photography eventually led him to electron microscopy: images of a world that the eye cannot ordinarily see.
Drawings made in response to electron photographs became the starting point for his early large-scale oil paintings. Working initially on wooden doors, he enlarged and reinterpreted these microscopic structures through paint.
The exploration continues in oil on canvas, where microscopic imagery meets forms observed in nature. Miller develops paintings in series, often moving between two or three canvases at the same time. Their possibilities remain a continuing source of fascination and inspiration. Color, pared-back forms, and nature’s energy sit at the heart of the practice.
